The Medical Office Receptionist is typically responsible for answering telephone calls, scheduling appointments and preparing correspondence. He or she knows medical office terminology, is familiar with office health information procedures and understand medical laws and ethics.

They also record simple medical histories, arrange for patients to be hospitalized, and order supplies. Most medical secretaries need to be familiar with insurance rules, billing practices, and hospital or laboratory procedures.
